MUMBAI: Government Railway Police at Churchgate arrested a 35-year-old ragpicker from Goregaon for molesting a 20-year-old college student in a moving local train in Mumbai and then snatching her bag and mobile phone, but was nabbed while running away.
On Monday evening, the victim was travelling from Prabhadevi to Churchgate, when the accused pulled the victim by her hair, bit her lips, and snatched her bag and mobile phone.
Railway commissioner Quaiser Khalid said they have registered a case under IPC sections for robbery and molestation, and sections 162 and 147 of The Railways Act. “DCP (western) is supervising the investigation. We regret the survivor’s experience and will take steps to resolve her grievance on priority and provide support,” said Khalid. The victim was alone in the women’s coach when Pappu Gupta got into the compartment and sat next to her. The victim said, “Immediately, I got up and stood near the door. The accused too got up and tried to snatch my bag and mobile phone when the train crossed Charni Road station. I fell from the coach when I resisted.”
A GRP official said the victim shouted for help, following which the accused jumped out of the train as it slowed down while entering Churchgate and started running away. Gupta was caught after some commuters and police at the station on hearing the victim’s screams caught Gupta before he could leave the premises.
