KOLKATA: The winter chill remained missing in the city on Monday even as the Met office predicted a rise in mercury and a “relatively warm period” till January 27.
While the minimum temperature could touch 19 degrees Celsius, the maximum is set to reach 30 degrees on Tuesday. The rise in temperature has been triggered by a western disturbance in northwest India that has cut off the northwesterly wind.
Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 16.9 degrees Celsius on Monday, which was three notches above the normal mark.
“With the chill-carrying northwesterly cut off, the mercury will now rise. Temperature during the day could touch 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and will continue to hover around that mark till at least January 27. We don’t see the mercury going down soon,” said Regional Meteorological Centre director G K Das.
A high-pressure zone along the Odisha coast has been supplying moisture to the region but it now has no impact on the weather here, said the Met office.
