KOLKATA: The second Covid ‘sentinel survey’ in Bengal, conducted between May 18 and 20 on 10,975 samples, has thrown up a positivity of 0.17%, with just 19 positives, a shade lower than that of the first survey, which had been 0.18%. In Kolkata, RG Kar tested 235 random samples, all of which tested negative. The nearest-to-Kolkata positive was detected from Howrah district hospital. Three samples each – the highest of all – tested positive at Nandigram and Basirhat hospitals. In 16 Bengal health districts, not a single sample tested positive. The samples had all been collected from asymptomatic patients who had turned up in hospitals for other treatments.
The second sentinel survey by Bengal government from May 18-20 has thrown up Covid positivity rate of 0.17% which is slightly lower than the 0.18% in the first survey conducted between April 27 and 29.
In this round, only 19 samples of the 10,975 collected randomly from people who turned up at government hospitals for treatment have turned out to be positive. Nineteen people had also tested positive in the first survey but 10,710 samples were collected then.
In Kolkata, RG Kar had tested 235 random samples in these three days. All samples tested negative for Covid. Closest to Kolkata, 398 samples were collected at Howrah district hospital, only one tested Covid positive. In Barasat district hospital, 405 random samples were tested and not a single turned out to be positive. Only one in the 435 samples collected in Baruipur sub-divisional hospital tested positive. Three samples each – the highest among all hospitals – tested positive at Nandigram and Basirhat hospitals. In 16 Bengal health districts, including Kolkata, not a single sample tested positive.
Public health specialist Anirban Dalui said, “The recent report is actually a relief for people of Bengal as most of the districts are showing no new asymptomatic cases. This is quite significant in terms of low infectivity of the strain. Good vaccination coverage is one of the reasons.”
“It is a good sign that nothing extremely odd has been found. But such efforts need to continue as they are important for public health strategy,” said Diptendra Sarkar, surgery professor at IPGMER.
As per health department, on Tuesday, Bengal had 25 people in hospital due to Covid while another 335 were in home isolation. Positivity rate was 0.3%.
