KOLKATA: Partha Chatterjee — who is in the custody of Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the teachers’ recruitment scam — was on Thursday stripped of the posts following a state cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will look after industry, other portfolios held by the sacked minister for the time being, reported PTI quoting officials.
ED has also arrested Chatterjee’s close associate Arpita Mukherjee, and seized crores of rupees from her houses in different parts of the city.

— Chatterjee, 69, held the portfolios of commerce and industry, parliamentary affairs, information technology and electronics, and public enterprises & industrial reconstruction in the state cabinet.
— Chatterjee, also the secretary-general of the Trinamool Congress, stepped into politics as a leader of Congress students’ wing — Chatra Parishad — in the late sixties during his college years.
— He decided to take a plunge into active politics after Banerjee broke away from the Congress and formed the TMC on January 1, 1998.

— He won from the Behala Paschim Assembly constituency for five consecutive terms since 2001 on a TMC ticket.
— He was appointed the leader of the TMC party in the assembly and later leader of the opposition.
— In 2011, he was given charge of industry and parliamentary affairs. In a cabinet reshuffle in 2014, he was removed from the industry department and given charge of education.
