A message circulating on WhatsApp groups claims to turn WhatsApp in Pink colour. Users are warned as experts say that this is a malicious message with a virus link. Clicking on the link will hack users’ phones and they could lose access to their WhatsApp account.
In a post on social media, cybersecurity expert Rajshekhar Rajaharia wrote “Beware of WhatsApp Pink!! A Virus is being spread in WhatsApp groups with an APK download link. Don’t click any link with the name of #WhatsappPink. Complete access to your phone will be lost.”
This is not the first time the instant messaging app WhatsApp is being used by threat actors for cyber frauds. Other than spreading fake messages and rumours, the Facebook-owned platform has become a tool for criminals to carry out nefarious activities like money frauds, job frauds and more.
Several Whatsapp users have been seen sharing the malicious link. The message claims to be an official update from WhatsApp that will not only change the app’s colour to pink but is also said to bring more features to the app. The users are advised not to install any APK or mobile app other than those available on the official app stores of Google and Apple.
Downloading apps from unknown sources can compromise the device’s safety and could result in the loss of personal data.
Cyber intelligence firm Voyager Infosec director Jiten Jain said “Such malicious apps can be used to compromise your phone and steal personal data like photos, SMS, contacts etc. Keyboard based malware can be used to track everything you type. It can be used to capture and steal banking passwords. The current case of Pink Whatsapp or Whatsapp Gold is also a case of malware impersonating as fake WhatsApp feature apps.”
