AURANGABAD: All the eight districts of Marathwada received light to medium showers in the 24-hour period ending on Thursday morning, bringing down the rainfall deficiency in the region to 15%.
While agricultural experts have advised the farming community to undertake sowing for the kharif season only if their area receives at least 100 mm rainfall, two districts in Marathwada — Parbhani and Hingoli (both 102 mm) — have already recorded the desired rainfall.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to light rainfall activity across many parts of the region after Saturday and it is expected to give momentum to the sowing activities.
While Aurangabad city and nearby areas reported few intermittent spells of rain, the district as a whole has recorded an average of 19 mm rainfall. Among other districts from the region, neighbouring Jalna district registered the highest (26 mm) rainfall followed by Parbhani (23mm), Hingoli, Beed (both 13mm), Nanded (7mm), Osmanabad (6mm) and Latur (4mm).
Marathwada as a whole has recorded 88 mm rainfall since June 1, accounting for 85% of the normal rainfall. The region, which has witnessed good run of monsoon in the past two years, had received surplus showers (141%) during the corresponding period last year.
K K Dakhore, agricultural meteorologist with Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University, said the farmers should undertake sowing only after necessary moisture is developed in the soil.
“The delayed progress of monsoon has slowed down sowing activity in many parts of the region. The farmers must show patience and wait for at least 100 mm rainfall in their areas for undertaking sowing,” he said.
