MANGALURU: BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on Friday met Avinash Narimogaru, who was allegedly assaulted by Puttur Rural police in connection with the case of a banner carrying photographs of former CM DV Sadananda Gowda and BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel with a garland of chappals placed on it near KSRTC bus stand on Monday.
Yatnal said that the developments related to the derogatory banner and the police highhandedness against Hindu activists in Puttur will be brought to the notice of the BJP high command.
“I have understood the truth behind the incident. I will bring it to the notice of the party leadership,” Yatnal said after meeting Avinash and other victims, along with Hindu activists, including independent candidate Arun Kumar Puthila, at the private hospital.
Explaining the incident to Yatnal, Puthila said that Hindu activists were beaten up by the police. “They were beaten up for one reason that they worked with us,” Puthila said.
Later, Yatnal told reporters that the incident reported in Puttur on May 15 was disgraceful.
“Police have no power to assault people, no matter what the complaint is. People of this region know what is behind this incident. I am not going to talk in detail about it. Criticisms, protests and clashes are common in politics. Police can only investigate but cannot show such brutality. They have not carried out any anti-national activity or any other crime. The DSP, who was involved in the case, should also be suspended and inquiry should continue,” Yatnal said.
“Hindu activists will have to face challenges in the days to come as the Congress government is being formed in the state,” he said.
“We have witnessed brutality against Hindu activists in the past when Congress was in power. Hindu activists are apprehensive that an atmosphere of fear could be created. I warn those police officials, who feel confident after the Congress victory, that we will not tolerate atrocities against Hindu workers. Protecting the interests of Hindu activists is the responsibility of the BJP,” Yatnal warned and announced Rs 1 lakh towards the treatment of victims.
To a query, Yatnal said that the BJP leadership has understood the popularity of Hindu activist Arun Kumar Puthila, who secured a large share of vote in Puttur. “This happened because of internal clashes and vested interests,’’ he claimed.
