Defending champion Novak Djokovic has been handed the top seed in men’s singles at Wimbledon 2022 while 2-time champion Rafael Nadal is the second seed in the absence of World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and World No. 2 Alexander Zverev.

Wimbledon main draw action will get underway on June 27 and the men’s final will be played on July 10.

Novak Djokovic, who is bidding to win his 7th Wimbledon crown, will not face Rafael Nadal until the final as the two greats are set to be drawn in different halves. Notably, Nadal and Djokovic had met in the semi-final at French Open but the Spaniard beat the Serb in 4 sets to win his 14th French Open title and 22nd Grand Slam crown.

Djokovic, who is the firm favourite to retain his Wimbledon crown, heads into Wimbledon after having lost his World No.1 spot to Medvedev, who will not be able to complete in the grass-court Grand Slam as the organisers have banned Russia and Belarusian players over the invasion of Ukraine. Djokovic lost 2000 ranking points after not being able to defend his Australian Open crown due to his unvaccinated status while he is set to lose another 2000 after Wimbledon, which does not offer ranking points this year.

Nadal, on the other hand, seems to have managed his foot injury issues well as he bids for his third successive Grand Slam title of the year after having won in Melbourne and Paris.

Wimbledon organisers had previously used a computer-based system favouring results on grass courts in the previous two years to determine the seedings but from the 2021 edition seedings mirror the world rankings.

Britain has two players in the top 10 seeds at their home major with Cameron Norrie ninth while U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu is 10th in the absence of Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka.

Poland’s world number one Iga Swiatek will be the women’s top seed with Estonian Annett Kontaveit the number two.

All eyes will also be Serena Williams as the 23-time Grand Slam champion returns to Grand Slam action for the first time since retiring hurt in the first round of Wimbledon last year. Serena, who has been handed a wildcard, will make her competitive return in doubles along with Ons Jabeur at Eastbourne WTA 500 tournament on Tuesday, June 21.
