KOLKATA: A 22-year-old woman’s body was found on the road in a middle-class neighbourhood in Haridevpur early on Tuesday, 11 hours after she had sent her husband her live location around 7pm on Monday.
Dalia Das Chakraborty had left home around 4pm on Monday, telling her husband, Rahul Chakraborty (32), that she was going to collect money from someone in Haridevpur. Police suspect Dalia was throttled and the motive was an argument over Rs 4,000.
Police said Dalia had taken up night assignments with the help of an agent, Arunava Patra, a former security supervisor living at Jagachha in Howrah. Patra and Dalia reportedly fell apart over the share of commissions. “The two had an argument over Rs 4,000 even before the assignment had got over and the payment was made. In a fit of rage, he throttled Dalia. He called his friend, Arjun Das (51), to help him dispose of the body,” said an officer. The two have been arrested.
“The two carried the body down the alley,” said joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma. They even stole Dalia’s gold necklace, gold ring and cash.
Dalia’s body was recovered from the side of Dr Jiban Mohini Ghosh Road by Haridevpur PS cops. When Dalia did not return home till late at night, Rahul began a search but did not go to police. “We got a tip-off about the body around 4am. Around 6.40am, cops took her to M R Bangur Hospital, where she was declared dead,” said DC (Behala) Soumya Roy. “Circumstantial evidence is indicative of murder.”
“The accused tried to flee but were caught. Patra was arrested first and his questioning led us to Das,” said Sharma.
